After owning an IDTV (Integrated Digital Television) for about 2 years we
decided that not being able to easily record Freeview television programmes
wasn't acceptable. We decided to get a PVR (Personal Video Recorder) with
integrated Freeview tuner to enable us to record our favourite programmes.
We selected the Topfield TF5800PVR after doing some research into the various models. The Topfield box has two tuners so you are able to record programmes that clash, or watch something whilst another programme is recording. Being an entirely digital system, it also records without quality loss and allows quick access to any programme stored on its 160GB hard disk. Another factor in choosing the Topfield is that it has a USB2 connection for transferring files to and fro using a computer. Looking on the internet we found a number of Mac compatible applications to do this. With these programs we discovered that it is possible to accurately remove advert breaks from TV shows and also download movies from the internet and watch them on the Topfield box (known often as the 'Toppy'). Handling the various movie file formats and applications was something of a challenge at first, so I have put this site together to help other Mac users get more from their Topfield PVRs. |
